An Accessibility Guide to Los Angeles Art Spaces, 2023-Ongoing

Decription:

Co-conceptualized with artist Rumpelstiltskin Morgan, and co-developed with Cedric Tai, Yemisi Oyeniyi, and Neil Doshi, this digital resource, map, and guide to art spaces in Los Angeles County is created through collective research and public outreach. The project emphasizes ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) considerations of accessibility as well as expanded perspectives of what accessibility is in diverse social contexts. The guide engages, but is not limited to architectural, financial, linguistic/informational, and cultural/social accessibility.

Our goal is to create space for the ongoing conversation about what accessibility needs are from different perspectives, how we situate ourselves and practices in these spaces, and provide clear information to support people that are looking to experience art.

Currently in development, the guide will include:

  • a Hard Data Map of the compatibility of art spaces and access needs through crowd sourced data.

  • a Gathering of Stories and Experiences of art-seekers.

  • a Slippery Glossary of Terms, developed in community that will offer definitions of commonly used terms relevant to the project.

  • a Sprouting Library of Resources that is a path to existing accessibility libraries, databases, and the work of artists/creatives working within this area.

This project is inspired and informed by separate inquiries to the LA Artist Census by artists Jaklin Romine and Rumpelstiltskin Morgan, as well as the abundance of work already created by those with first hand experiences and those working in disability advocacy/justice.
